North America’s offshore wind and grid upgrade sectors continue to grow fast, yet local high-voltage subsea cable production has long been insufficient to meet booming project demands. To fill this market gap, LS Cable & System is investing $725.6 million to build a new professional HVDC subsea cable manufacturing base in Chesapeake, Virginia, scheduled for completion and operation in late 2027. Equipped with advanced vertical continuous vulcanization equipment and supported by exclusive waterfront docks, the new plant will produce up to 500 kilometers of high-performance HVDC subsea cables annually, enabling direct vessel loading and greatly simplifying the entire transportation and delivery process.
This new manufacturing layout brings obvious changes to North America’s renewable energy supply chain. For a long time, local large-scale offshore wind projects have relied heavily on imported European and Asian subsea cables, facing long lead times, high shipping costs and unstable delivery schedules. Localized production effectively reduces cross-border supply risks and helps local renewable projects comply with US IRA policy requirements, gaining better tax incentive qualifications. Meanwhile, the new facility breaks the long-term market dominance of traditional European subsea cable manufacturers, providing local engineering and procurement teams with more reliable and cost-effective sourcing options. Combined with LS Cable’s ongoing medium-voltage cable expansion in North Carolina, the brand now forms a complete supply system covering both offshore subsea cables and onshore power cables, further supporting regional offshore wind construction, grid renovation and data center power infrastructure development.
As regional supply chains become more localized and stable, the North American power cable market is ushering in a new round of upgrading. Reliable, short-cycle and policy-compliant cable manufacturing will become the core demand of future energy projects.
