Selecting the right power cable involves more than choosing conductor size and comparing prices. Wrong cable selection causes overheating, premature ageing, inspection failure and costly rework, even when other parts of your project are well-executed.
Whether for building construction, energy-storage facilities, industrial plants or outdoor power distribution, confirm these key factors before finalising cable specifications.
Clarify your laying environment
Underground-buried cables face soil pressure, moisture and termite risks. Armoured cables are strongly recommended for direct burial. Non-armoured cables work well for cable-tray and indoor wiring. Cables exposed to sunlight or high heat need high-temperature-resistant insulation. Cold-climate projects require special insulation formulations to avoid cracking in winter installation.
Confirm working temperature and ampacity
Cables with the same cross-section deliver different current capacity due to insulation materials. PVC cables are rated 70°C, while XLPE and LSZH cables operate at 90°C. In hot environments, 70°C PVC cannot substitute for 90°C cables of equal size, otherwise overheating occurs under normal load.
Fire-safety performance matters
Flame-retardant cables limit fire spread. Fire-resistant cables keep emergency circuits powered during fire. LSZH cables are mandatory in many regions for public buildings, hospitals and battery energy-storage sites to reduce toxic smoke. These grades cannot be used interchangeably.
Check local market requirements
Different markets enforce unique standards. Tropical projects often require anti-corrosion and anti-termite features. Many Middle-East countries require LSZH for public-area projects.
